The Soil & Water Ecosystems Biophysics group (SWEB, Chair Prof. Dr. Gang Wang) at CAU is looking for postdoc candidates to join in our unique research projects on,
1) Bacteriophage-host interaction modes and impacts on microbial community patterns and ecological functions: in-situ experimental observation and computational simulations;
2) Land-Water-Food-Climate nexus towards understanding the systems dynamics of land, water, food and energy flows and interactions within multi-scale landscapes and between numerous interfaces, and impacts on agricultural productivity, ecosystem sustainability and global climate changes.
Job Description
· Research Fellows on Soil Microbial Ecology, Environmental Biophysics, Land-Water-Food-Climate nexus in the Soil & Water Ecosystems Biophysics group at CAU
· Salary: up to CNY 450,000 for National postdoc project candidates
· Housing (University apartments available for National project candidates)
· Full time postdoc research fellow
· Minimum 24 months, extensible to 36 months
· Successful postdoc applicants will be supervised under Prof. Dr. Gang Wang at CAU and his collaborators at Eawag and ETH Zurich (Switzerland), IIASA (Austria), and UC Davis and University of Delaware (USA)
· Faculty positions available for excellent applicants upon successful completion of the postdoc work
Your skills and attributes for success
· Doctoral degree in a relevant quantitative discipline (e.g. Microbiology, Soil ecology, Environmental biophysics) achieved in recent three years, and under 32 years old before the deadline for applications. Candidates with a doctoral degree older than three years may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.
· Experience with analyzing “omics” data.
· Experience programming in a high-level scripting language (R, python) will be an advantage.
· Experience of planning and executing research projects and complex integrative analysis of large datasets
Responsibilities
The candidates are expected to have interests in understanding of either
1) bacterial population interactions and assemblages, and bacteriophage-host interactions in an ecological context,
2) or 2) the systems dynamics of land, water, food and energy flows within multi-scale landscapes and between numerous interfaces, and consequences of conservational agriculture practices and management on land and water conservation, water use efficiency, soil carbon sequestration and greenhouse emissions, which are crucial for food and water security, and climate mitigations, as well as rural revitalizations and reduction of urban-rural inequality.
The positions involve research including experimentation, data management, and writing scientific papers, and/or teaching. The candidates will use state-of-the-art molecular biology and biophysical techniques, such as NGS of bacterial communities, digital holographic microscopy- and planar optode technique-based methods, and bioinformatics, or will use (or to advance) multi-scale agroecosystems models for quantifying soil-water-food-climate nexus and their consequences on land and water conservation, water use efficiency, soil carbon sequestration and greenhouse emissions. Experience in confocal microscopy and multivariate statistical analysis is merited.
